Chicago Bears Boost Their 2024 Pass Defense After Signing Star Green Bay Packers Safety
Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

Jonathan Owens may be more familiar to fans outside the NFL as Simone Biles’ husband. However, he’s built a reputation as a capable safety who has recently blossomed into an all-around piece for the secondary.

The Chicago Bears have been looking for a capable man who can bolster their secondary, and they may have finally found their man after Owens agreed to a two-year deal that will see him compete for the starting strong safety role in the Windy City.

Chicago Bears offered Jonathan Owens $4.5 million to pry him away from Green Bay

According to Bleacher Report’s Erin Walsh, the safety was offered with a two-year deal worth $4.5 million to leave the Packers.

The contract is well-deserved considering his performance for the Packers over their 2023 campaign that saw them almost topple the San Francsico 49ers in the divisonal rounds. In 17 regular-season games, he notched 58 solo tackles, one sack, three pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery that he brought back 27 yards for a defensive touchdown.

His wife, Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, thanked Green Bay for the love they showed her and her husband during their lone year in Wisconsin.

Johnson also thanked the Packers organization for giving him a chance after his breakout 2022 season with the Houston Texans.

What does the Chicago Bears roster look like now?

The Chicago Bears now have one of the better defensive lineups in the NFL after acquiring Owens:

Owens joins a talented secondary that includes Jaquan Brisker, Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson and the newly-signed Kevin Byard, who agreed to a two-year, $15 million deal with the franchise on Sunday following his release from the Philadelphia Eagles.

However, their offense might be in a bit of a tough spot as they let Darnell Mooney walk out the door. They also have a tough dilemma in trying to figure out where to send Justin Fields as no team is seemingly interested in his services while paying a king’s ransom in exchange.

Jonathan Owens hopes that the team will be able to fix their issues and put together a strong team that can compete in the NFC North.
