The Golden State Warriors crashed and burned out of the 2024 Playoffs after failing to beat the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament. While this isn’t the first time the Warriors missed out on a playoff appearance, this loss felt different.

It was clear to everyone that this was probably the last dance for the dynastic Warriors trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.

Despite his qualms about it, Curry will likely spend the rest of his career as a Warrior without Thompson. Meanwhile, the other half of the Splash Brothers will have a lot of thinking to do after his final game of the season has fans convinced that his career is over.

However, the atmosphere is different around Green. He’s never been known to be a shooter, but he’s the engine that kept the dynasty running. He was vital to how Steve Kerr ran the Warriors offense despite the problems he’s caused on and off the court.

Golden State Warriors have a tough decision on Draymond Green’s future

ESPN’s Zach Lowe wrote an extensive breakdown of what’s next for the Warriors, going from the top players to the end of the bench.

His writeup on Green puts the Michigan State product in a curious situation, even hinting that some people within the franchise might be pushing to get him out of the door as quickly as possible:

They have a decision to make on Green, whose volatility has worn on several within the organization, sources said. But everyone within the team understands how good Green still is — one of the league’s best defenders, and an orchestrator of the Golden State motion offense who enjoys rare chemistry with Curry. Finding a team willing to trade significant future assets for Green would be tricky; he is owed $77 million over the next three seasons, and the rest of the league has watched the chaos of the past 24 months.

To have such things said about one of the cornerstones of the organization is strange. Green has caused drama with his teammates and opponents over the past couple of years, which hurt his reputation within the organization.

However, it would be tough for the Warriors to find another player like him in the league. If they decide to part ways with him, Steve Kerr would have to do a lot of adjusting to make the Dubs competitive again.
